I find so much value in practices that promote nervous system health and overall well-being. In a world that often feels rushed and transactional, there's something deeply grounding about connecting with habits that genuinely nurture your well-being, providing space to meet you where you are, and creating room for you to feel balanced, centered, and supported.
In the context of health, for me, effort isn't just about grand gestures or drastic changes. It's about the small, daily, consistent acts of self-care and attention that add to your joy and health. It's the daily mindfulness practice because it helps you understand what's going on in your body. It's the nutrient-dense meal you prepare, not just to fill you up, but to nourish you deeply. It's the restorative sleep that acknowledges your body's need for rest and recovery, making sure your energy is replenished. These consistent efforts are what truly support my nervous system and overall health.
In the last few years, I've been shifting my perspective about the need for supporting the nervous system and how by addressing that area, we also address our overall health. Surface-level wellness practices do nothing for me. I spent years scratching the surface with quick fixes but not going deep out of fear. I've learned to let go of that. I'm no longer biting my tongue when it comes to asking for what my body and mind really need. It's not too much. Supporting my nervous system has been important to me especially since my diagnosis of breast cancer 4 years ago.
I spent many years in a state where my efforts toward health were not reflected by my lifestyle, and it was like pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it. No matter how much I gave or poured, it never felt like enough, and eventually, I was left drained, depleted, and sick. Being on the other side of that feels like an exhale—one I've been waiting to take. There's a natural flow, an ease in the connection between mind and body that feels… GOOD. Not having to second-guess if I'm doing enough for my health is a place of peace.
Now, I consider my wellness practices as my friends. I've waited all my life to arrive here—to feel grounded in my health journey. It feels good to be tending to practices that are growing and blooming.
Emotional availability plays a crucial role in all of this. A major lesson for me over the past few years is that being physically present is not enough. There's also a need for emotional presence. We create fertile ground for our health by being open to vulnerability, allowing space for joy and discomfort, and being willing to engage in the sometimes messy work of real connection. Showing up, not just when it's convenient, but when it's sticky, messy, or hard, is deeply important to me.
The older I get, the more attuned I've become to the energy exchange within myself. I've learned to prioritize practices that offer peace and mutual respect, and to gently release those that don't. I now look at things (and some people) with a “filter;” things, events/experiences, how and with whom I spend my time with, all go through one question, Is this ___[insert any of the above]___ a whole-hearted ‘Yes?’ Because if it’s not and it’ll end up being depleting to my health, it’s a ‘No.” This self-awareness has been crucial in supporting my nervous system.
For me, this is about recognizing that time, energy, and emotional well-being are precious, and they need to be met with the same level of care and consideration. This shift in perspective has brought me such greater ease. I no longer feel the need to chase after things (or people) that aren't aligned with my goals, circumstances, and needs. I'm choosing to focus on nurturing practices where effort is “reciprocated.” I’m sticking with routines that make me feel like a human being rather than a human doing. My wellness journey reminds me of the importance of being present for yourself. It's about recognizing the value of your health and ensuring that value is matched with actions.
As I continue to grow and change, I hold this truth close: I need nourishing practices that deeply support my nervous system and overall health. Dare I say it, we all do.
Everyday habits play a pivotal role in maintaining and supporting our nervous system's health. It's the morning routine of gentle stretches and deep breathing exercises that set the tone for a calm and focused day. It's the afternoon break where I step outside to feel the sun on my face, grounding myself in nature. These moments are vital, and they serve as reminders that taking time for a pause is not only acceptable but necessary.
Hydration is another simple yet powerful practice. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day keeps my body and mind functioning optimally. It’s about listening to my body’s signals and responding. I’ve learned that my nervous system thrives on consistency and predictability, so I create daily routines that support this need.
Balanced meals play an equally important role. By making mindful food choices, I ensure that my body has the building blocks it needs to maintain a resilient nervous system.
Quality sleep is another cornerstone of nervous system support. I’ve created a bedtime routine that signals to my body that it’s time to wind down. This includes reading, sipping on tea, or gentle stretching. These habits help me transition into a restful state, ensuring that I get the deep, restorative sleep my nervous system needs to recover and rejuvenate and be available for loved ones.
Exercise is another key component. I engage in activities that I enjoy, whether it’s walking, dancing, or a hike in nature. It’s not about intense workouts, but rather about moving my body in ways that feel good and are sustainable.
I also make time for creativity and play, recognizing that these are essential for a healthy nervous system. Whether it’s writing or any other creative outlet, engaging in creative activities brings joy and fulfillment, allowing my nervous system to relax and reset.
As I reflect on these practices, I realize that they are all interconnected. Each one supports the other, creating a holistic approach to nervous system health.
These habits have helped me to cultivate a sense of inner peace and hopefully, resilience.
